Boats and Trains and Buses

April 13 (approx 3:00 p.m.)

Water Taxi - Marco Polo Airport

Buying Alilaguna tickets and boarding boats
Claim baggage; leave the terminal building and go left on the sidewalk outside the building to the covered walkway. Near the end of the sidewalk, to the left of the doors, you'll see a sign for Alilaguna boats and water taxis.  7- to 10-minute walk from the terminal.
Buy tickets at the Alilaguna booth by the pier. (The public-transportation counter in the arrivals terminal also sells Alilaguna tickets.) If the ticket booth is closed, not to worry: You can pay the conductor on the boat for a small surcharge.

A note about luggage
When you board the boat, the conductor will take suitcases and stow them for you. At the end of the ride, get off the boat and wait for the Alilaguna staff to unload suitcases onto the pier.

April 15 - after 11:00 a.m.

Train from Venice to Florence

Trenitalia - Venezia S. Lucia
13:25 (1:25 pm) Firenze S.M. Novella 15:30 (02:05)
Train: Frecciargento. Prices starting at 38 EURO
Validate ticket before getting on train.

Bus from Florence to Siena

The bus station in Florence is very close to the train station, right in front, but may be a bit hard to find at first as it is down a small street and hidden within the block. The easiest way to find it is to ask directions for "auto-stazione" (bus station) but you can also
map the address: Via Santa Caterina da Siena.
There are two different buses to Siena: Rapida (fast) and Ordinaria (ordinary).
The Rapida, line 131R, is a non-stop line between Florence and Siena lasting about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The Ordinaria, line 131O, stops in two villages on the way and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The bus does have adequate storage space for luggage.
You arrive in Siena at Piazza Gramsci/Viale Tozzi, which is closer to the center than the train station Approx: 8 EURO

A Must:  Validate your ticket by getting it stamped in the machine as you enter the bus.

April 18 - Around noon

Bus from Siena to Montepulciano

Regional buses in Tuscany are tricky. They come late, they leave early or they just don't come at all. Tra-in, the bus company that operates the Siena-Montepulciano route, typically offers five or six daily direct buses on this route. In the off-season -- late fall, winter and early spring -- the schedule reduces in frequency, eliminating the morning and evening buses. Buses do not run on Sundays any time of year, so factor that into your travel itinerary.

Purchasing Tickets
Tuscany has several different bus companies offering service between the major cities and rural locations. To go between Montepulciano and Siena, you need to take a Tra-in bus. Purchase tickets inside the Siena train station at either the cafe cashier's desk on the left of the main waiting area or the tourism office straight ahead on the right. Fares depend on the route, so tell the cashier that you are going to Montepulciano, and purchase a return ticket at the same time if you need one.
Bus Stop Locations

Buses to Montepulciano leave from the Siena train station, instead of the bus depot almost a mile away, up the hill in central Siena. If you are heading directly to Montepulciano after arriving in Siena by train, simply purchase your bus ticket and head outside the main station doors to the left. The bus stop is along the corner of the building. If you are leaving from central Siena, factor in an additional 20 minutes to walk down the hill to the train station. In Montepulciano, the bus terminates at Piazzale Pietro Nenni, at the foot of the city walls.
